Google Search Ranking August Volatility Report

Google Search Ranking August Volatility Report
Graig Upton 26/08/2025

Over the past several weeks, we’ve been closely monitoring the fluctuations in Google’s search rankings, and the trends have been anything but predictable. Not long ago, a period was highlighted where volatility seemed to ease, suggesting a potential cooling-off. Interestingly, while most of that week appeared relatively calm, conversations within the SEO community began to intensify as the weekend approached. Oddly enough, the major tracking tools didn’t reflect that surge in activity until several days later.

Here’s a breakdown of what unfolded:

On Wednesday and Thursday, August 20th and 21st, SEO professionals began reporting noticeable shifts in rankings. The chatter pointed to significant swings, but things appeared to stabilise again heading into the weekend. Then, almost out of sync, third-party volatility tracking tools showed their sharpest spikes on Saturday and Sunday, after the community’s initial reports had already settled down.

To put this in context, Google’s June 2025 Core Update officially launched on June 30th and wrapped up on July 17th. However, even after the rollout ended, volatility persisted well into the following weeks. At the time of the announcement, activity appeared minimal, but by July 2nd the turbulence began to show. On July 10th, another wave of fluctuations was noted, with some site owners experiencing partial rebounds from previous core and helpful content updates. These recoveries weren’t consistent across the board, and notably, the turbulence in rankings persisted even several days after the official end of the update, continuing to shake up search results.

We’ve tracked this ongoing instability in multiple reports, most recently on August 6th and August 11th, noting signs of temporary relief. Yet, as the latest week has shown, ranking fluctuations remain unpredictable and continue to challenge both site owners and SEO practitioners.
